Exhaustion and Gratitude: A Moment of Reflection
Video (08:35): I recently spent a little time in the woods reflecting on some really difficult times over the past few weeks, the unexpected growth of Quiet Frontier, and something I hadn’t anticipated when I started making these videos: discovering that so many other people are wrestling with the same questions about life, society, meaning, and the world around us.

00:00:00 so I decided I’d spend a little time out here in the woods today actually it was kind of decided
00:00:10 for me I set up a trail cam a few days ago and got to thinking after I got back home did did I
00:00:19 ever turn that thing on so I’m still not sure I didn’t reach the trail cam yet but I thought I’d
00:00:25 also take a chance to do a quick recording just kind of a check-in I think we’ve all been at that
00:00:33 point where you know everything kind of stops making sense and it gets hard to know even where
00:00:40 we are and I don’t mean geographically I mean mentally like we get to where we’re just barely
00:00:47 functioning we’re checking boxes and most of the boxes we’re checking seem kind of pointless
00:00:53 and we start to wonder you know why why does everything seem so difficult
00:01:02 that’s kind of where I’ve been lately the last few weeks have been a real roller coaster ride
00:01:12 and it’s one of those rides where halfway through you realize you know that safety bar that’s supposed
00:01:20 to hold you in isn’t working right and you’re moving way way too fast for that turn that’s coming
00:01:27 up ahead yeah I’m I’m exhausted and I don’t mean like nap exhausted it’s that deeper exhaustion that
00:01:39 comes when like too much life is just happening all at one time when you finally hit the silence
00:01:46 and the weight of everything just comes settling down on your shoulders so so this video it’s not
00:01:54 quite the same as my normal videos it’s more like a check-in uh kind of a quick look at where I’m at
00:02:01 and also more importantly it’s something that’s been keeping me afloat through all this
00:02:09 with all the chaos there’s been this one consistent bright spot and and that that has been this
00:02:18 youtube channel when I started posting here I had no growth strategy no obsession with analytics
00:02:26 no thumbnail optimizing for clips or clicks rather in fact I think I might have been unconsciously
00:02:34 avoiding all that stuff this started as just a way to share some ideas at the time it was mostly a place
00:02:44 where I could post some videos for students in my classes kind of kind of a place to look at ideas
00:02:50 and about mind and society without any pressure but then things started to shift the the youtube gods
00:03:01 uh decided to give this channel a little bit of momentum and the growth has been surprising
00:03:09 and at the same time kind of overwhelming there’s a strange tension when something you started with
00:03:18 no particular goal becomes public in a way that you never anticipated I mean it crosses my mind at times
00:03:26 you know are really are people really up at 2 a.m listening to me ramble on about critical thinking
00:03:33 and it’s a strange thought but beneath all that those feelings of overwhelm there’s there’s a tremendous
00:03:42 sense of gratitude as well I’m really really glad that these videos found you the numbers are nice
00:03:50 uh but but but they’re not really what matters I mean numbers are numbers but what really does matter
00:03:56 is the resonance reading your comments has been a real revelation as I’ve been kind of embarking on
00:04:04 this journey I’ve spent so long feeling like you know I’m the only one asking these weird overly deep
00:04:11 questions the kind that make people say you know you’re kind of getting a little too deep for a work night
00:04:17 aren’t you but the feedback here has really shown I’m not alone a lot of you are wrestling with these
00:04:27 exact same questions questioning our structures searching for meaning in a world that’s become really
00:04:35 really fragmented and trying to think critically with without losing losing your mind
00:04:42 there’s something really comforting and finding out that your internal monologue is actually a shared
00:04:50 conversation it transforms the whole thing from solitary rambling into some kind of genuine connection
00:05:00 knowing that these ideas resonate makes all the effort feel worth it I really truly appreciate every
00:05:09 single one of you is taking the time to watch these videos to sometimes respond and share your thoughts
00:05:16 truly thank you
00:05:19 there’s a really strong temptation in the modern ecosystem to turn everything into a formula
00:05:28 take some kind of organic curiosity and sandpaper it down until it’s a content pillar or some kind of retention script
00:05:37 I don’t want quiet frontier to be that kind of polished product
00:05:44 sure I want the quality to be as good as I can with the tools I have to work with
00:05:49 but I don’t want it to feel like some corporate seminar on self-improvement
00:05:54 my plan is to keep exploring these ideas in as honest and a straightforward way as I possibly can
00:06:03 some videos are going to be short some are going to be long some are going to be about the same as the ones I’m doing now
00:06:10 some are going to be more structured others might just be me talking through what I’m feeling
00:06:17 while recovering from a really really grueling couple of weeks
00:06:22 I want this space to stay pretty close to what it is it’s a place where it’s okay to change your mind
00:06:29 to wander down some kind of intellectual rabbit hole
00:06:33 just to see where it leads
00:06:35 if that means things slow down or if things speed up or if things stay the same
00:06:40 it’s all okay
00:06:41 the questions themselves are a lot more valuable than any optimization or polish that I can add on to it
00:06:50 so here’s the takeaway from all this for me
00:06:54 maybe maybe for you as well appreciate the unexpected connections that happen
00:07:01 when we’re honest about our confusion and about our curiosity
00:07:06 if you’ve been feeling exhausted lately
00:07:10 if you feel like you’re the only person asking these questions in your circle of people that you hang around with
00:07:17 just know you you probably aren’t
00:07:20 there’s others out there in their own quiet frontiers
00:07:25 wondering the same things that you’re wondering
00:07:28 the thing I’m most grateful for isn’t really the growth of the channel itself
00:07:33 it’s realizing that there’s other people who are asking a lot of these same questions
00:07:39 that realization alone
00:07:42 kind of makes this roller coaster ride just a little bit easier to handle
00:07:48 thanks thanks so much for being here
00:07:51 and thanks for listening
00:07:53 I guess then I’ll see you in the next one
00:07:58 take good care
00:07:59 it’s funny how the changing of the seasons
00:08:06 can make a person feel so all alone
00:08:15 thoughts born yesterday seem void of reason
00:08:22 prayers to the unknown
