From Consumption to Creation: Reclaim Your Focus and Attention
Video (07:40): We live in a world designed to capture our attention, not focus it.In this reflection, I explore how shifting from consumption to creation, and switching to open-source tools like Linux, helped me reclaim focus and meaning. 00:00:15 You
00:00:21 Ever sit down at your computer to do
00:00:23 something productive? I mean really
00:00:25 genuinely get something done, maybe a
00:00:27 piece of writing or some content creation
00:00:31 or just some research that you need to get
00:00:35 done. And somehow instead of that ended up
00:00:39 playing solitaire for an hour or maybe got
00:00:43 lost in endless scrolling through social
00:00:45 media and videos. Well, that’s exactly
00:00:49 what I used to do. Every time I opened up
00:00:52 the computer, I just felt like I drifted
00:00:55 into something completely mindless. And it
00:00:59 wasn’t about being lazy. It was just kind
00:01:02 of happening. When I switched away from
00:01:05 commercial operating systems to the free
00:01:08 and open source world of GNU Linux,
00:01:11 something completely unexpected happened.
00:01:14 And yes, I did say GNU Linux. That’s a
00:01:17 small tip of the hat to the history of
00:01:20 free software and the people who reminded
00:01:23 us that the tools we use should serve us
00:01:26 and not own us. So anyway, that shift, it
00:01:30 changed more than just the software. It
00:01:32 changed how I used my attention. I stopped
00:01:35 drifting. It made me realize this wasn’t a
00:01:39 tech problem. It was a mindset problem.
00:01:42 Mindless mouse movements, unfocused
00:01:45 consumption. They all have a way of
00:01:48 becoming numbing. Consumption without
00:01:52 purpose. Consumption without purpose. So
00:01:53 this video is about shifting from
00:01:56 consumption to creation, even in small
00:02:00 ways, and how that shift can help you to
00:02:03 reclaim your focus. We live in a world
00:02:09 built to capture our attention, not to
00:02:12 focus it. Social media, streaming
00:02:15 services, even most apps that we use,
00:02:18 they’re designed to keep us engaged for as
00:02:21 long as possible. And they’re really,
00:02:23 really good at it. That’s not an accident.
00:02:26 It’s a business model. They exploit our
00:02:30 brain’s reward system. They give us tiny
00:02:32 hits of dopamine with every notification,
00:02:35 every like, every share, every new video
00:02:39 that we see, and the scrolling is endless.
00:02:43 From my background in mental health, I’ve
00:02:45 seen this pattern over and over. Whether
00:02:48 it’s with substance use disorders or
00:02:51 compulsive scrolling, the core issue is
00:02:55 often the same. A reinforcement loop
00:02:58 without any reflection. And that’s not
00:03:01 about weakness. It’s about systems that
00:03:05 bypass our natural ability to self
00:03:08 -regulate. So what does all this have to
00:03:12 do with Linux? Well, the main reason,
00:03:15 Linux doesn’t offer instant entertainment.
00:03:18 It doesn’t spoon-feed you a polished
00:03:21 experience. You have to make choices. You
00:03:24 have to solve some problems. And you have
00:03:27 to learn as you go. Even something as
00:03:30 simple as setting up your workspace, it’s
00:03:33 an active process. You are a participant
00:03:36 in that process. It’s not about clicking
00:03:39 next a hundred times or agreeing to huge
00:03:45 documents that you have no idea what they
00:03:47 actually said. It’s about being a
00:03:50 participant. Shaping your digital
00:03:53 environment. Every decision, even the
00:03:56 little ones, they bring you into the
00:03:57 process. It’s funny, Linux doesn’t try to
00:04:02 keep me busy with constant noise,
00:04:04 notifications, or advertisements. It just
00:04:07 gives me space to work. So that brings us
00:04:11 to the core idea of this video and the
00:04:16 topics that I’m covering today. And that
00:04:19 core idea is creation. Creative work taps
00:04:23 into a deeper kind of satisfaction.
00:04:27 Psychologists call it eudaimonic
00:04:29 happiness. The fulfillment that comes from
00:04:32 meaning and purpose and growth. And that’s
00:04:36 opposed to the quick pleasure-based
00:04:39 hedonic hits that we get from constant
00:04:43 consumption. The instant gratification.
00:04:46 When you’re building something, when
00:04:48 you’re writing, making something, it
00:04:52 engages that deeper system. You’re not
00:04:55 chasing the next moment of stimulation.
00:04:57 You’re inhabiting the space that you’re
00:05:00 already in. And that’s what people mean
00:05:03 when they talk about that concept of flow.
00:05:06 Being in the moment. Being completely
00:05:09 absorbed by the activity that you’re
00:05:12 currently engaged in. And that’s the
00:05:14 opposite of compulsion. Instead of being
00:05:18 pulled by distraction, you’re actually
00:05:20 directing your own attention. Productivity
00:05:24 becomes a form of mindfulness. It’s not a
00:05:26 race, but it’s actually a rhythm that we
00:05:30 find. In counseling, I used to say,
00:05:33 consumption can go on forever. It’s a
00:05:36 bottomless pit. But creation tells you
00:05:40 when it’s time to stop. When you finish
00:05:42 something. When you’re satisfied. You
00:05:45 rest. It’s a natural rhythm. And one that
00:05:48 we as human beings have largely forgotten.
00:05:53 So, maybe this wasn’t all about just
00:05:56 switching to Linux for me. Maybe it was
00:05:58 really more about switching from
00:06:00 consumption to creation. And that can be
00:06:04 in whatever part of your life you need
00:06:07 that most. What’s one small thing you can

00:06:38 In how we choose to live. And how we
00:06:40 choose to create. Thanks so much for
